What I Do

As a manager at an Australian consulting firm focusing on growth strategies, I am in charge of a major piece of a project for a particular client. Perhaps unlike other larger consulting firms, a manager here does not have responsibility for more than one client at a time. We have a partner or high-level principal at the client site day to day and several managers like me running different pieces of the engagement.

Generally, with any client I am responsible for business process design on operations or technology-based projects—these projects are available in two flavors. At the high level, I might do a strategic piece of work to help a client launch a new type of business or change an existing one.

This could involve establishing management structure; planning physical changes, infrastructure, and technology; setting up marketing, sourcing, and call centers; and making everything work together. Or at the implementation level, I might do a “value management” project to actually turn the high-level strategy into an operating reality. The best kinds of projects are [those in which] I can do the strategic development first, and then move into the implementation role and finish the job.

How a management consultant utilizes his MBA education

I am a management consultant in the global services practice of my company, which provides a full range of consulting and professional services to our clients. This full-service approach complements our technology or product business and helps our base of customers take maximum advantage of their technology investments.

We frequently do management consulting as a stand-alone project (for example, to help our clients set their e-business strategy), and we occasionally partner with pure-play management consulting firms. We might also be part of a multivendor project that my organization is project managing. It depends on what services the client wants to buy in support of its business objectives for the project.

I am responsible for consulting engagements within the public sector—government and education and health clients.  On a typical client engagement, I work at client sites from six weeks to three to six months, as part of a small team.

What I Do

My company is privately held with five people and was founded in 2011. We make medical devices that remove obstructions; technically, we outsource the manufacturing. I started the company in my second year of the MBA program at Babson as part of the entrepreneurship intensity Track (EIT) for which 25 of us were selected to participate. This enabled me to launch the company in the safe environment of the school while getting all the advice of faculty, office space, and funding before graduating with the MBA.

A major part of my role as president, especially in the early stages, was securing funding. Because of our small size, I do most everything: financials and budgeting, fundraising, strategic planning, some engineering, and interfacing with the outside world.

The other members of the organization include a research-and-development engineer, a quality engineer, and a sales and marketing person.

What I Enjoy Most

I love being my boss and leading the company in the direction I think it should go. I like performing a variety of tasks and constantly learning.

I am responsible for the technology side of our software development company, which targets the insurance supply chain. My role as chief information officer (CIO) is to manage the product and technology development and bridge the gap between the domain (or education experts) and the technical staff.

We deal with large target group (people who want to pass the GED exam), specifically, we offer online GED prep to help narrow the knowledge gap through the free content, from the occasional website browser to a committed student who invests in his study materials.We also work with companies, through their HR officer.

I learned the technology piece, backed by years in the industry and a deep understanding of data supply chain issues.

What I Enjoy Most

I love a challenge. There is a new challenge every day with a company that is just three years old. We launched when I was getting my MBA part-time. There is no better way to experience how to manage a business and the people than to roll the MBA curriculum into real life.

If you are looking to start a company, you have to have a very realistic business plan, particularly in this economy. Gone are the dot-com glory days of free-flowing financing, huge marketing budgets, and expensive office space.

From the very beginning, you have to plan carefully and manage your resources very efficiently. You have to find creative ways to extract the most value from each dollar and individual because it will be a long time before you have all the resources you want or need.

Pay attention to your financial statements and make sure you manage your cash flow. If you aren’t hitting your goals, make adjustments sooner than later—it will almost always take longer to get where you’re going than you originally predicted.

How to choose an MBA in healthcare

Finding a reputable school with a program that fits your own lifestyle with weekend, executive programs and interactive, distance-learning courses were the only considerations I had because of my work and family obligations.

When I looked at distance learning or interactive MBAs, I did a search and, surprisingly, found a lot of options. However, I wanted a school with a good reputation in its overall MBA offering. I thought this was really important if I was already doing the non-traditional thing in terms of type of MBA study.

The real knock-out factor for me, however, was that some of the established interactive MBA programs required an international residency, which would’ve been impossible for me.
